Details

Since 2017, Ireland has actively been redesigning and reinvesting in the public transport networks serving its cities and towns. Through this process, the National Transport Authority (NTA), Local Authorities, and their consultant partners have developed insights into the ways that Irish land use and town planning has helped or hindered the success of bus services. Based on this experience, and led by the expertise of Jarrett Walker & Associates (JWA), the NTA has published a Guidance Document ‘Planning Cities and Towns for Successful Bus Services’, which highlights and addresses the main issues identified. Using real life scenarios and conceptual examples, this Guidance Document advises on how land use planning can make bus operations more efficient and direct, make buses easier to access, and how developments function better when organised around a frequent bus network. These design principles, in general, are applicable internationally, and the concepts lend themselves to the practical application of Transit Orientated Development.
