A large number of projects are in progress every year for research and innovation in the railway sector. Not always people in charge of managing a project have complete skills related to project management, financial management and collaborative work. Moreover, they often rely on generic tools (e.g. Excel files, email messages) in order to support their work in the project, as well as the work of the involved researchers. This can result in less than expected performance level in the project, possibly causing delays and mistakes, so increasing the costs and reducing work efficiency. Having in mind, through direct experience in many European research projects, the specific problems and difficulties related to running a project, my company developed a methodology based on a number of specific procedures which aims to reach two well precise objectives: 1 - To enable improved collaboration and communication between geographically distributed research teams participating in a common project; 2 - To support coordinators and managers in monitoring and controlling all aspects of a project. The methodology, supported by a suitable IT instrument, is addressing all aspects of the project lifecycle and all processes which are needed in a project.
