The increase of active travel funding over the last four years in Ireland (ATI) and England (ATE) has placed a strong emphasis on transport safety - however road fatalities have been slowly rising. There is a lack of understanding of the root cause of these lethal incidents, and investment in technology to monitor the effectiveness of initiatives funded by ATI/ATE is sorely lacking. There is an urgent need for something which can gather better data around road safety, including looking at near misses.
This session will describe a solution to the problem of monitoring road safety, looking at how AI and Computer Vision can understand accidents before they happen. The session will introduce the dichotomy of the two zeros; Vision Zero and Net Zero, and explore the complicated relationship between both of these twinned goals.
Beyond safety, you will learn how this same technology is already being used for smarter traffic monitoring to understand detailed road usage, with over 5,000 sensors from London to Melbourne having already analysed 20Bn road-user movements. This represents a paradigm shift in how the world responds to the twin ambitions of Vision Zero and Net Zero, providing critical datasets and analysis to support these transitions.
