The United States has a long and complex history of producing public housing and subsidized affordable housing, but does not yet have a developed social housing system. However in recent years, many state and local governments as well as individual housing providers have begun to experiment with new programs designed to deliver social housing. The California legislature has recently passed a state law to study how social housing might be created in the most populous state in the U.S. At the same time, places as diverse as Portland, Los Angeles, and Montgomery County, Maryland are looking at ways of implementing social housing. Come learn about these new efforts to advance social housing and what the opportunities and pitfalls are to make social housing a success in the United States.
